Signs Your Dryer Vent Is Clogged (and What to Check)

A clogged dryer vent usually shows up as loads that need two cycles, clothes that come out hot but still damp, a warm or musty laundry room, and an outside flap that barely moves. If you notice two or more, check the lint screen and the outside hood, then call a pro.

Seven clues a dryer vent is clogged

Dryer vents almost never fail overnight. Lint builds up a little with every load, so the signs creep in and are easy to blame on an aging machine. These are the ones our crew sees most when we are called out for a slow dryer.

  • Loads need more than one cycle to dry, especially towels, jeans and bedding.
  • Clothes come out hot to the touch but still damp.
  • The top or back of the dryer feels hotter than it used to.
  • The laundry room gets warmer or more humid than normal while the dryer runs.
  • A hot, dusty or musty smell hangs around after a cycle.
  • Lint collects around the door, behind the machine or on the floor near the wall connection.
  • The flap on the outside hood barely lifts, or you can see lint packed into the hood.

One symptom alone can have another cause, such as an overloaded drum or a worn part inside the dryer. Two or three together point to the vent. Why your dryer takes two cycles shows how to tell them apart.

A U.S. Fire Administration report backs up the first two clues: when heavy items such as jeans or towels take a long time to dry, or clothes feel hotter than usual at the end of a cycle, a clogged vent is the likely problem.

What you can safely check yourself

You do not need tools for a first look. Work through these in order, with the dryer off and cool whenever your hands are near it.

  1. Clean the lint screen before every load. Every so often, rinse it with warm water and a little dish soap and let it dry. Fabric softener sheets can leave a film that blocks the mesh even when it looks clean.
  2. Run the dryer for a few minutes and watch the outside hood. You should see the flap open and feel steady airflow. A weak puff, or no movement at all, is a strong hint. The U.S. Fire Administration's dryer safety flyer lists the same check: the outside vent cover should open while the dryer runs.
  3. With the dryer off, look at the hood and flap for lint, leaves or a bird nest. Wear gloves and clear only what you can reach from the ground; if there is a live nest or you need a ladder, call someone.
  4. If the dryer is electric and easy to slide out, look at the duct behind it. It should not be crushed, kinked or pulled off the wall connection. Our foil flex vs rigid dryer duct comparison shows what a sound one looks like. Leave gas dryers where they are; the gas line is a job for a pro.

When to stop and call a pro

Some situations are not a do-it-yourself job, and a few need you to stop using the dryer right away.

  • The flap still will not open after you clear the hood.
  • The vent runs through a wall, ceiling or roof, or the duct is out of reach.
  • You see lint blowing back into the room or collecting inside the dryer cabinet.
  • The problem keeps coming back within a few months of cleaning.

If you ever smell something burning, stop the dryer and, if it is safe to reach, unplug it. Keep it off until it has been looked at. If you see smoke or flames, leave the house and call 911.

Why it is worth fixing

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that failure to clean was the leading factor contributing to the ignition of home clothes dryer fires from 2018 to 2020, at 31 percent. Lint is dry, light and easy to ignite when airflow is poor. That alone makes a blocked vent worth dealing with.

There are everyday reasons too. A blocked vent traps heat and moisture, so the dryer runs longer, clothes wear faster and your laundry room stays damp. A clear vent lets the dryer do its job in one cycle.

Quick answers

Can a clogged dryer vent cause a burning smell?

Yes. Lint packed in the duct or heating area can give off a hot, scorched smell. Stop the dryer, unplug it and do not use it again until the vent and the machine have been inspected by a professional.

Is the lint screen enough to keep my vent clear?

No. The screen catches most lint, but fine fibers still pass through and settle in the duct and hood over time. Cleaning the screen every load helps, but the vent itself still needs periodic cleaning.

How do I know if the problem is the vent or the dryer?

If the outside flap barely opens while the dryer runs, suspect the vent. If airflow is strong but clothes stay damp, the dryer itself may need an appliance technician. Our troubleshooting guide walks through the order.
