Dryer vents

Why Your Dryer Takes Two Cycles to Dry

When a dryer needs two cycles, work from easiest to hardest: check load size, the lint screen, the outside flap and the duct behind the machine. If the flap barely opens while the dryer runs, the vent is likely restricted. If airflow is strong, the dryer itself may need repair.

Check in this order, easiest first

A dryer that needs two cycles is losing the battle somewhere between the drum and the outdoors. Start with the free fixes and move down the list. Stop at the first step that changes the result.

Keep the dryer off and cool whenever your hands are inside it or near the duct.

  1. Load size. A drum packed tight does not let air move through the clothes. Try half the load and see whether it dries in one cycle.
  2. Lint screen. Clean it, then rinse it with warm water and dish soap if it feels stiff or looks shiny. A film from fabric softener sheets can block airflow while the screen looks clean.
  3. Outside flap. Run the dryer and watch the hood. A flap that opens wide and stays open is a good sign. One that barely twitches, or is stuck shut with lint, points to a restriction.
  4. Duct behind the dryer. If it is easy to see, make sure it is not crushed, kinked or pulled off the wall connection. Leave gas dryers in place and leave the gas line to a pro.
  5. The dryer itself. If airflow is strong but clothes stay damp, a worn heating part or thermostat may be the cause. That is an appliance technician's call, not a vent cleaner's.

Write down what you changed and what happened. 'Half load, still two cycles' tells you the problem is not the load, and it will save a technician time if you do end up calling one.

How to tell the vent from the machine

The outside flap is the best clue you have. A healthy vent pushes a steady stream of warm, moist air out of the hood, and you can feel it with your hand a few inches away.

If that stream is weak, warm air and moisture are stuck inside the duct, the clothes stay damp and the dryer runs longer. That is the classic vent problem. If the stream is strong and clothes are still wet, look at the machine.

Layout matters too. A U.S. Department of Energy job aid on dryer venting notes that long runs and excessive bends increase dry time, a common problem with rowhome and twin dryer vents.

What not to do

It is tempting to crank up the heat or keep restarting the cycle, but both treat the symptom and add wear. Hotter settings can also be harder on clothes and the dryer.

Please do not open the dryer cabinet, poke around the heating area or disconnect a gas line to look for lint. Those spots are easy to damage and not worth the injury risk. If the problem needs more than a surface look, call someone.

  • Do not run the dryer if you smell something burning.
  • Do not use a drill-powered brush on a duct you cannot see the end of.
  • Do not replace a vent with plastic or thin foil to save time. Foil flex vs rigid dryer duct explains what to use instead.

When the vent turns out to be the answer

If the flap barely opens and you have already cleared the screen and hood, lint is probably packed further along the duct. That is the part a professional dryer vent cleaning is built for. We clear the lint from the run, from the dryer connection out to the hood, on jobs that range from dryer vent cleaning in Norristown to dryer vents in Northeast Philadelphia.

A two-cycle dryer is worth fixing sooner rather than later, and not just for the extra laundry time. A U.S. Fire Administration report on 2008 to 2010 data estimated 2,900 clothes dryer fires a year in residential buildings and named failure to clean as the leading factor contributing to ignition, at 34 percent.

Quick answers

Can a clogged vent make clothes smell musty?

It can. When moist air cannot leave the dryer quickly, damp clothes sit in a warm drum longer and can pick up a stale smell. A clear vent lets the moisture out, so loads finish drying faster.

Why does my dryer take longer in winter?

Several things can combine in the cold season: heavier fabrics, and a chilly laundry room that slows drying. If you also see a weak flap at the outside hood, the vent is still the first thing to check.

Should I replace my dryer if it takes two cycles?

Not before checking airflow. A restricted vent makes a good dryer look broken, and a new dryer connected to the same blocked vent will struggle in the same way. Check and clear the vent first.
